Community Prisons

In NYC we have the privilege of being able to hold criminals on an island: a secure location where it is very difficult to escape. Yet the mayor and the city council wants to close Rikers Island and move our criminals into prisons in the heart of each of the city’s boroughs.

A community prison benefits nobody. Criminals should not be housed next to schools and our homes. The answer to poor condidtions in a prison is not taking a flawed system and moving it right into our neighborhoods.

The prison on Rikers Islands should be left open and any reforms that need to happen should be conducted on the island and not as an experiment next to our homes.

As State Senator I will do all I can to stand against a Mayor who does not stand with us and do all I could civically and in Albany to prevent this misguided policy from being implemented.
